Jesus is helped by Simon of Cyrene to carry his cross

And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus.

(Luke 23:26)

As Jesus makes his way to Golgotha where He will be hung and killed, He is unable to bear His cross.  That is when Simon of Cyrene is grabbed from the crowd to help Jesus carry His cross.

Not too long before this moment Jesus was teaching and said this…

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

(Matthew 25:37-40)

Simon helped Jesus in his time of need just as we are called to help others in their time of need.  Have there been times when you’ve had the opportunity to help someone in their time of need?  What did you do?  How did you feel after making that choice?

Take one of the crosses on the table and pray over it along with the others on the table.Ask God to use these crosses as a reminder for us to help those in need just like Simon helped Jesus. When opportunities arise, let us be able to step up like Christ did when He helped the sick and the hungry.
